Expand Your Social NetworkWhat Network Marketer doesn’t want to grow their business?  Seems like a silly question, huh?  But when you stop and consider for a moment that there are many in mlm who use the wrong methods when working their businesses, the question has to be asked.  Now, what I really want to know when asking this question is whether those who use tactics like the “3-foot rule”, and who are still placing fliers on peoples’ mailboxes and car windshields are aware that there is a much better way to expand their network of prospects and business associates.  First off, let me say that if you’re using any of the above tactics to build you business, please stop immediately.  I say this, not as a Network Marketer, but as a citizen who hates getting fliers taped to my mailbox (that pesky tape never seems to come off cleanly).  And when I’m in the Barnes and Noble trying to have some leisure time, It really makes me uncomfortable having to have a discussion about a prospective business opportunity with some fellow I’ve never seen before.  Please know, that if those are some of the methods you’re using, they are very unattractive, and don’t really position you well as someone who can lead others toward Network Marketing Success.  Please don’t understand what I’m not saying…I appreciate the creativity and the work ethic that Network Marketers exhibit when they consistently place themselves in the path of people who they believe can benefit from their products and their opportunity, but it’s important that serious thought go into whether these tactics are actually helping or hindering them in the long run…particularly in the eyes of prospects and potential customers.

This Road Is ClosedI just know how I feel when I come home and see that car driving up and down the wrong side of the street…positioned ”just so” in order for the driver to be able to get to our mailboxes from the inside of the car.  So, what do I do when I get these fliers on my mailbox?  Quite frankly, I crumble it up and promptly discard the flier into my recycling bin.  Am I being cruel, here?  Possibly, but I do get irritated, not by the fact that the person wants to get the word out about his or her business, but by the fact that they seem to be entirely comfortable with coming extremely close to violating my privacy.  Well, I’ve spent entirely too much time on that particular topic.  Guess you can tell how I feel about those types of marketing tactics, huh?

Back to what I really wanted to say.  When you look to grow your business, you must seriously consider what types of activities you will undertake in order to make that happen.  The term Network Marketing implies that the business owner will work to establish and expand his or her network by communicating with people…terms like “word of mouth”, “social networking”, and “sharing” are fairly popular in mlm, so that is not a foreign term to any business owner, whether they’re a newbie or a crafty veteran.  The type of communication is important, and exactly what type of discussion will take place is another essential component in the successful expansion of any business network.  What we often see from those in Network Marketing is a ”default” to what has worked in the past.  One reason I believe this happens is that many veteran MLMers have obtained their success approaching people.  At this point, there is probably not that great a need for them to learn something new, whether it is more effective or not.  They’ve got so many people in their organization that there really is no real urgency to change what has worked so well in the past.

The problem, though, is that they can only teach those new to Network Marketing what they know…thus, they teach the old methods and hope that things work out for the best.  As long as a new business owner is on Autoship for the minimum monthly requirement, they’re set.  Where does that leave you?

Building your social network should be a high priority for you since that’sTake That Big Step Toward Big Money the key to you pulling in those ridiculous monthly checks with bonuses galore.  You could use the methods your upline is teaching you, but I guarantee, after a year of not making any money, you’re going to start wondering if there’s a better way somewhere out there.  I hope you think of me when you have this discussion…Not that I want to gloat or anything like that, but because I want you to be reminded that there is, indeed, a better way to build your business.  It is through the using the Internet.  The World Wide Web is growing at an amazing rate, and that’s not just because our younger generation loves sitting in front of the computer.  It is because businesses are wising up and are running the Internet in droves as they see the vast potential of Internet Marketing.  The leverage one gets through this medium is unmatched.  No matter how many traditional Networking groups you join, and how many business cards you accumulate through business fairs and expo’s, one-on-one and group breakfasts, etc…etc…you will never come close to reaching the potential of the internet.  You can literally see your business explode overnight on the Internet because your audience grows immeasurably when your business’ message is online…you won’t get an audience anywhere near that using traditional marketing.  In closing, I would encourage you to give what I’ve said here some serious thought, and if you’re trying to build without the internet, you might be doing youself, your family, and your business a grave disservice.  It’s worth a look, and once you see what it is I see, you will wonder what took you so long.  Hopefully, you won’t wait too long to take action and we’ll be able to say “Better late than never.”

Why You Must Stop Paying for Leads

August 5th, 2009

The New Business OwnerWhen a new Network Marketer gets started out in the business, their first and most pressing need is to figure out how they will get their message to the world.  It can be an extremely daunting task since they usually have little to no knowledge of how this Industry works.  In addition, they typically are lacking in experience, and often times resources to really make the big splash they so urgently want to make.

Your first few months in your new business might look something like this:

Month #1

  • You sign-up as an Independent Business Owner with much excitement
  • You put together your warm-market list of people to contact about your products and/or opportunity
  • You begin diligently making daily calls to your warm market with the high hopes of enthusiastic responses and lots of purchases and/or sign-ups into your organization
  • You quickly learn after a few weeks or so of constant and time-consuming phone activity and one-on-one meetings that this might have been a bad idea…”Uggh!…why is this so hard?”
  • You wake up one morning with the realization that your warm-market is about as warm as a block of ice on a cold snowy day in Minnesota
  • You call your upline sponsor for help!  “What am I doing wrong?”
  • Your upline sponsor lets you know that you must continue with your efforts…”It’s hard work and it will take a little while…but it will happen EVENTUALLY.  You’ve got to get in front of as many people as possible.”
  • You continue working diligently, doing what your sponsor told you, only to meet with similar results

Month #2

  • More opportunity meetings and phone calls to your warm market ensue…”Maybe things will work out this time…if I’d maybe work a little harder”
  • A few people enroll into your organization…but wait…IT’S JUST TO GET THE WHOLESALE PRICE ON PRODUCTS!…”Well, at least it’s something”
  • You secure a few retail customers who don’t sign up for the Auto-Ship program, so no residual income there…”Hey maybe things are starting to turn around?!…Maybe Not!
  • The flurry of calls and meetings continue, and things seem to be turning around…Enter Month #3!!

Month #3

  • You take stock in everything that you’ve done in your brief Network Marketing career…this can be very painful
  • You determine if it’s all worth it…and depending upon what you decide…this might be where you exit stage right…never again to return to the world of mlm…”Just too many bad memories…and, oh the rejection!  Boy does that hurt!”
  • You determine that things need to change…You need to consider a whole new way of reaching prospects if you’re going to achieve your dream of financial freedom.
  • You consider buying leads as a way to increase your chances of growing your business…”With people who actually want to work the business.”  That would be so great.

That’s When the Adventure Begins

You decide to take advantage of your Network Marketing Company’s “Super Qualified” leads with the hope that theseWhoa, Not So Fast! people will hear your message and be ready to take action!  Let’s see here…and the options are many…You have anything from $1.00 lead specials, on up.  If you want the Super Duper Qualified leads, you’re gonna have to pay up big time, but the rewards will far outweigh the investment…Yeah, Right!  If your idea of reward is having to chase these people down day after day…trying to get them to watch your Company’s Opportunity and Compensation DVD only to be perpetually disappointed with their lame excuses about why they couldn’t take 15 minutes out of their week to review the information.  Wait a minute…Weren’t these supposed to be the Super Duper Highly Qualified leads?

That’s when you start to wonder if it’s just you.  You begin to wonder if you really have what it takes to make it in this Industry.  Everyone else seems to be doing so well, but why is this so hard?  Well, I’m here to tell you that when you use the old “Stalking” techniques…that is when your business consists of numerous methods of “approaching” people, you will meet with more rejection than anyone was meant to experience.  No wonder 97% of Network Marketers never make a single dollar of profit in this Industry and ultimately walk away.  Most of them, and I include myself in this group, are being constantly told that they need to adopt techniques that aren’t really viable anymore in this day and age.  They may have been effective before the internet and social media were introduced, but now, if you’re exclusively using approach tactics in your business, it may be time to re-evaluate whether you’re doing the right business activities.  If you’re paying for leads…for the ability to contact people that you’ve never met, and who know nothing about you, and likely very little about your company, then you’ve got your work cut out for you from the very beginning.  No matter how personable you sound on the phone, and how wonderfully you deliver your message, there’s still going to be a major hurdle that you’ll need to overcome, which is whether this person is really interested in, or ready for what you have to offer.

So, if you’ve spent $200.00 for leads, you must not only consider whether you will make a return on your investment, but more importantly, you must consider whether the time invested in prospecting these fine folks will be worth it to you in the end.  Certainly, you must be prepared for the myriad of excuses that you’ll hear, the endless questions and empty promises that you’ll receive as you pour yourself out in an attempt to draw them into your organization.  In the end, you must ask yourself whether there’s a better way to do things.  Are you leveraging your business efforts with this kind of activity?  The answer is a definitive NO!  Now, could you experience some success with these methods…sure you can, but it comes back to the time investment that you’ll surely have to make to get anywhere close to the results you want to achieve.

That brings us back to my initial point.  When we pay for leads, and use other tactics whereby we’re the one approaching people, we’re creating more work for ourselves than necessary, not to mention that we’re setting ourselves up for a big-time amount of rejection.  Now, you might be saying “Wait a minute…these are actual leads…not just someone out of the blue, here.  These people are supposed to be interested in what I have to offer.”  Well, my friend, that’s what the people who sell you the leads say.  Why would they say otherwise.  Remember, they want you to actually “buy” their leads.  In reality, that’s not usually the way it turns out.  That’s not to say that there won’t be the occasional prospect who will be very interested in what you have to say.  They may even decide to join your organization, but these folks are few and far between.  Now, how many people will you have to prospect just to get to that “Needle” in your hay stack of purchased leads.

The World Wide WebWhat’s the solution, you might say?  Well, it comes down to being able to generate your own leads through developing and then feeding your own marketing funnel on the internet.  It really is quite simple, when you think about it.  There are many people involved with Network Marketing in various capacities who have created a funnel through which they have attracted people to them by providing valuable information, products, and resources that are high quality and intriguing enough to compel prospects to action.  Usually, that includes the prospect giving their name and email address for access to information products, services, newsletters, etc…  These people then end up on an email lists (also known as the “Drip System” and are considered a ”lead”, though not necessarily a high qualified lead, but they are now seated in the Internet Marketer’s “virtual audience” of prospects and begin receiving information, newsletters, product promotions, and other related materials that are designed to move them along the marketing continuum until they eventually reach the classification of “highly qualified”, and make that purchase.  This is how lead generation works…it takes time, but the energy expenditure from this process is nothing compared to what you could do in a person-to-person format, especially if you’re plan is to build a large organization.

When you rely upon someone else’s efforts to get you leads, you end up with a prospect who was interested in what someone else had to offer, not you.  That’s the issue here.  So as you begin talking to them about your Network Marketing opportunity, they may not have any concept of what your company is, and may not have any interest in your particular opportunity.  More importantly, you two have yet to build any type of relationship, so the conversation is likely to be awkward at best.  They may eventually warm up to you, but how much time will that take, and even so…the relationship they built with the company you purchased your leads from is far better and way more leveraged than with you.

I hope you’re getting what I’m saying here.  Learning to generate your own leads online will be so much more efficient, and will not cost you tons of money or personal time…it will actually free you up big time to focus on so many other areas of your business.  Imaging having your “virtual message” out there speaking on your behalf 24 hours a day.  That’s what will happen.  You can go to sleep at night knowing that your marketing funnel will be perpetually filled with new prospects even when you stop.  Not only that…these will be people who actually are interested in what you have to offer and…get this…they may even be seeking you out to talk to you about your products and/or opportunity.  Now that’s what I want for my business, and what I trust that you want for yours, even though you may not quite be able to see how it might all work out for you right now.  Being open to new ways to market your Network Marketing business includes being open to many possibilities, and that includes being open to the Internet.  Explore your possibilities and know that Yes, it is possible, and Yes, you can do it!  If you want to talk, please contact me.  I’d be glad to show you how you can use the Internet 2.0 and all that it entails to propel your business to new heights.

Will Your MLM Business Survive Without the Internet?

August 3rd, 2009

Business VisionWill your business survive without the internet?  Good question that I’d like for you to ponder for a moment.  Right now, the internet, and in particular, the social media are extremely popular.  People are using the internet for various resons, not the least of them is promoting their businesses.  Let me ask you another question…If you’re not using the Internet to promote your business, do you think you’re reaching your potential?  I would venture to say that you’re not even close right now.  I say that because of the sheer volume of users, and particularly consumers who now use the internet to purchase products and services.  It’s literally taking over our culture as many people would now prefer to purchase online.  When they do search for whatever it is they want, will they run into you on the web?  Will they set eyes on your buffet of products and services?  If the answer is no, then it is highly likely that your business-building efforts are not being maximized.

I don’t know if you realize this, but thousands of people are getting into Network Marketing every day and many of those who are considering a particular opportunity are going online to do their research.  Imagine that you’ve spent 3 hours speaking with a prospect about your business opportunity.  They have yet to make a decision because they want to do their homework about the Company you’ve just discussed with them.  As they go home and do their research…where do you think they will go?  You got it…they’re going to go surf the internet.

When they do find your Network Marketing Company, are they going to find any information about you there?  Absolutely not!  All they are going to find is information about the Company…not you.  Why not have an Internet presence so that when you talk with prospects about your products or opportunity, you have a place to send them…THAT IS NOT YOUR MLM COMPANY’S REPLICATED WEBSITE!!

I can’t emphasize that enough.  If you want to be attractive to your prospects and customers, you need to position yourself as a leader…and you do not your prospects turning away from you…or worse…joining someone else’s organization because they don’t feel confident with your ability to lead them to business success.  The Internet is a powerful way to position yourself as that leader they so desperately need.

When you get your business on the Internet, there is great potential for credibility and respect.  Now, your prospective business partners and customers see you as a competent and “relevant” because you see the possibilities of the internet and are able to lead them to their ”pot of gold”.  You don’t want for a prospect to see you and your methods as outdated and irrelevant…and that is likely to happen once they go online and see what your competition is doing with their businesses.  Don’t be left behind, and certainly don’t hold yourself and your business back.  Whatever your reasons may be for not using the internet, they must be re-evaluated.  Most importantly, as the internet continues to grow, and more and more people grab their piece of the pie, will you be on the outside looking in?  Will your business need resuscitation as it clings to it’s last shreds of life?  Please know that time is not on your side with regarding the internet…it is of the essence!  Get moving now so you can position yourself in front of the wave, where you’re able to maximize all of the potential of the internet and the riches that will come.

My Network Marketing Odyssey

July 28th, 2009

My Network Marketing OdysseyWell, it’s been one heck of a ride!  Two years in MLM, and I had already had enough!  I’m not one to give up so quickly with new endeavors…in fact, my tendency is usually to stick with things too long.  Not this time, though.  Many a time over the last year and a half, I would ask engage myself in a dialogue that sounded something like this…

I’d say something like “Hey Self”

And My Self Would Then Say “Yes, Charles?”

Then I’d say “what is that loud sound I hear?”

And My Self Would Say “Why, It is the sound of money kicking and screaming as it moves from your bank account into the bank account of your upline”.

Once I heard that, which was about once a month during our first year, well, I didn’t much feel like talking to my self anymore.  In fact, I didn’t want to talk with anyone in my upline either.  It always confounded my why these folks seemed to be doing so well financially, while I was steadily losing money and growing more and more confused about what I was supposed to be doing to build my business.

I remember doing the conference call thing when I and my wife started out with our first mlm.  We’d call in and hear amazing stories of how ordinary people were doing such extraordinary things with the business.  Then the call would end with some inspirational speech designed to motivate everyone into immediate and significant action.

At that particular time, It was all intriguing to me how these people were doing what they were doing.  I remember spending countless hours researching mlm business building strategies, formulas for success, etc…I wanted to know how these people were doing this.  Online, offline, telephone calls, meetings, etc…

It finally occurred to me one day after going to a recruiting meeting that these folks were not sharing any of this information with folks like me.  Here I was paying my $5.00 to see someone tell everyone how he became a success story.  Not only that, he was able to point out some others in the room who were making crazy money doing the business.

That left that nagging question still in my head…What are these people doing?  I was tired of hearing the same old speech about how they had gotten tired of the “rat race”, and they determined that they were going to “take control” of their lives and build a future for them, their children, and their grand children.  I wanted more than the “I started doing the business part time, making about $100.00 a month, and in 6 months I was making $5,000 a month.  That was all well and good, but how did that help me build my business?

Needless to say, that after about 6 months of making phone calls to people who wanted no part of what I was doing, having home meetings where nobody showed up, and giving out samples of product to folks who loved it but couldn’t afford to buy (Now, how do I tell these folks about the business if they can’t even afford to buy the products?)…after setting goals, re-evaluating my “Why”, and establishing my own business strategies that got me nowhere, I had given up on mlm altogether.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t mind putting in hard work.  I have a Doctoral Degree in Education, so I know what hard work looks like.  The problem I had here was that I needed to get my hands on a sound marketing strategy that I was confident would work for me, and that I could see some results with.  I’m not talking about tons of money here…just help me to be able to pay for my monthly Autoship.  That would have been progress!  Sadly, I did not get anything close to that with my first mlm company.  Great people, great products, but not very helpful at all when it came to helping people build their business.

I determined that I was done with trying to recruit people into the business.  In fact, I had decided that I would stay enrolled just so I could take advantage of the preferred customer discount as I continued regular use the products.  Six months of constant rejection will do that to you.  For the next six months, that was the state of things for me, and I was ok with it.  Here and there, I’d let folks know about it, but that was it.  I thought, anything would be better than working my tail off with nothing to show for my efforts.  I figured…why keep busting my butt running all around town, spending money on food that no one’s going to eat (because they didn’t even show), telling people about my business when they have absolutely no interest at all?  As far as I was concerned, I could get the same results doing nothing at all.  And that was what I did.

I liked it for a while, but after a little time passed, there I was again…considering another opportunity.  Would I dare initiate yet another dialogue with myself about mlm?  Yes, it happened!  This particular conversation went something like this?

Me:      “Hello again, Self”

Self:    “What do you want now?”

Me:      “Hey, I’m thinking that, perhaps, I should give this mlm thing another shot.  I mean, maybe it was just that one company, and just perhaps, I won’t have the same issues with another company.”  I mean, the compensation plan is so much better, the products are superior, and the company support structure appears to be great!”  So, what do you say?”

Self:    “Have you looked at your bank account lately?”

Me:      No…are you kidding?  I dare not do that!  I don’t even want to know how much debt I’m in.

Self:    If you’re asking me…the answer is NO!!!

Me:      Well, it’s a good thing I didn’t ask.

And I was back in business (if that’s what you want to call it).  I was determined to do everything I was told to do by my upline “sponsors”.  I did tons of conference calls, plugged into the system, and really applied myself…poised for major change…and success.  Well, we all know where that got me…Even more debt!  Why didn’t I listen to myself?  Had I done so, I would have saved myself from more debt, and even more fruitless business activities that led me across that famous “bridge to nowhere.”

Why was this happening?  I had no clue, and was even to the point of contemplating pulling the plug on yet another failed mlm experiment when I came across some life-changing information on the internet while checking my e-mail which was mostly polluted by mlm “gurus” and other so called “experts”.

Through a routine check of my inbox, I found myself strangely attracted to a particular email.  Instead of the Usual blah, blah, blah that I usually come across…I actually read something that intrigued me.  I read about how I could avoid the constant rejection that I so frequently encountered while trying to build my network marketing business.  I also read about methods and strategies that I could use to build my business the right way…all the while avoiding feeling like a street hustler using the same old tired lines day after day to people who could see them coming from halfway across the country.

After reading further, I knew I had found something “real”.  I had to find out more.  I downloaded the free e-book “The Network Marketing Manifesto”, authored by Ann Sieg.  I finished the book in about 2 days, and began to, once again, see the light.  I knew that this time, things would be different…not because she said it would, but because deep down inside, I agreed with everything she had to say, and she actually used sound marketing principles, not outdated tricks and tactics that violate every fiber of decency I’ve tried to hold onto during my short network marketing career.  I invested in a system developed by Ann and a very successful Internet Marketer named Mike Klingler called “Renegade Professional” for $49.00 and I must say…it’s been the best $49.00 I’ve ever spent, and, by far, the best investment I’ve ever made into my business.  This was the only system that I’ve ever found that actually takes you by the hand and shows you exactly what you must do to succeed in mlm.  Truly Amazing!

When I started with the system, it was truly like Christmas!  I had finally hit the Jackpot.  After just less than 2 months implementing this system, I still feel that way.  Here are a few things that I’ve learned thus far:

1.         How to build my business using Social Networking methods such as Facebook, Squidoo, YouTube, Twitter…just to name a few methods that I’ve found so valuable.

2.         How to position myself as a Network Marketing Professional that people want to duplicate

3.         How to have hungry prospects lining up to talk to me about my network marketing opportunity…without me having to chase them down.

And that’s just the tip of the iceberg for me.

I’m finally beginning to feel confident that I’m doing the “right things” in my business.  No longer am I paralyzed with fear and worry that I’m wasting my time, doing activities and implementing strategies that will ultimately get me nowhere.  I can see and feel the progress, and am as excited as ever (as if you couldn’t tell)!

Thanks to Ann Sieg and Mike Klingler…I’m going to finally reach my goal of financial independence because of you!

If you are reading this and would like to learn more about this amazing system, call me!  I am so eager to tell you about and show you a system that you can use to take your business multiple levels beyond where it is now!  And I say it with absolutely no doubt or apprehension.
